Why bank reconciliation is still a headache for Moroccan SMEs
In Morocco, a large share of business-to-business payments still goes through cheques and the LCN (lettre de change normalisée), a standardised bill of exchange. A cheque deposited for collection shows up on the statement days later, an LCN is only paid on its due date, and bank charges land without warning. As a result, the book balance and the statement balance almost never match, and the gap is usually explained by hand, at month end, in a spreadsheet.
Bank reconciliation means explaining that gap line by line. Until it is done, you cannot be sure a customer has really paid, that a cheque you issued has cleared, or that nothing was forgotten. It is also a check your accountant will ask for at every closing.
Worked example: a reconciliation in dirhams
At month end your bank ledger shows 42,100.00 DH and the bank statement shows 48,200.00 DH. The 6,100.00 DH gap comes down to three lines: a 5,000.00 DH supplier cheque issued but not yet debited, a 1,250.00 DH customer transfer received by the bank but not yet recorded, and 150.00 DH of bank charges you had not booked.
Calculation: 42,100.00 + 5,000.00 + 1,250.00 − 150.00 = 48,200.00 DH, so the reconciliation balances. In SOGESTIO the 1,250.00 DH transfer is matched to the customer's invoice, the charges are recorded, and the 5,000.00 DH cheque stays pending until it appears on the next statement.
| Task | Spreadsheet | SOGESTIO |
|---|---|---|
| Getting the statement | Copy-paste or re-keying | MT940 or CSV import |
| Matching a transfer to an invoice | Manual search | Linked to the payment, invoice settled |
| Tracking LCN bills | Separate list | Number, bank, due date, status |
| Accounting entries | Typed by hand | Generated on the CGNC chart |
| Traceability | None | Audit log |
How SOGESTIO handles your accounts and statements
Each bank account is set up with its RIB (Moroccan bank account identifier), which then appears automatically on your invoices. Transactions are entered or imported, then reconciled. Import accepts MT940, the electronic statement format offered by most banks, as well as CSV for banks that only provide a spreadsheet export.
- Several bank accounts per company, each with its RIB
- Bank statement import in MT940 or CSV format
- Matching of statement lines with customer and supplier payments
- Accounting entries generated on the Moroccan CGNC chart at every payment
- Matching (lettrage) of paid invoices in the ledger
- Audit log: who entered or reconciled what, and when
Cheques and LCN bills: a portfolio tracked until collection
A wholesaler who receives a 30,000.00 DH LCN payable in 60 days has to keep it in mind until maturity, deposit it at the right time and react fast if it bounces. SOGESTIO records every cheque and bill with its number, drawee bank, due date and status, whether received from a customer or issued to a supplier.
You see at a glance which bills fall due this week, which are already deposited and which need attention. Expected amounts feed the cash flow forecast, so you never count on money that will only arrive next month.
- Cheques and bills received from customers
- Cheques and bills issued to suppliers
- Number, bank, due date and status for each instrument
- Link to the related invoice or payment
Banking connected to invoicing and accounting
In SOGESTIO, banking is not an isolated module. When a customer payment is recorded, the invoice is marked paid, the accounting entry is generated and the bank account is updated. The dashboard then shows cash, receivables, unpaid invoices and late payments without any re-keying.
For the accountant, journals, general ledger and trial balance directly reflect reconciled transactions. For the managing director, the question «has this customer paid?» is answered in seconds, from a web browser or the Android app.
Which SOGESTIO plan includes banking and cheques?
The Banking & treasury module is included in the Pro plan at 449 DH excl. VAT per month (4,490 DH excl. VAT per year, up to 10 users) and in the Group plan at 990 DH excl. VAT per month for several companies. It is also available in the On-premise edition, on quotation. The Starter plan covers petty cash but not bank accounts.
You can try the module during the free 14-day trial, with no card required: import an MT940 statement from your bank and run your first reconciliation. Trial data is kept when you subscribe.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Moroccan bank provide MT940 statements?
Most banks offer an MT940 electronic statement from their business online banking; check with your account manager. If your bank only provides a spreadsheet export, SOGESTIO also accepts CSV import. Either way, you no longer re-key statement lines.
What is an LCN and how do I track it in SOGESTIO?
The LCN (lettre de change normalisée) is a standardised bill of exchange widely used in Morocco for deferred payment. In SOGESTIO each LCN is recorded with its number, bank, due date and status, so you know which bills are falling due and which have been collected.
Is bank reconciliation fully automatic?
SOGESTIO imports statement lines and helps you match them with payments already recorded. You stay in control: you confirm each match and handle unmatched lines such as bank charges. Your accountant remains responsible for the closing.
Can I manage several accounts at different banks?
Yes. You create as many bank accounts as you need, each with its RIB, and import each bank's statements separately. The dashboard brings together the cash position of all accounts.
Is the banking module included in the Starter plan?
No. Starter covers invoicing, stock, expenses and petty cash. Banking, cheques and bills are included from the Pro plan at 449 DH excl. VAT per month, as well as in the Group plan and the On-premise edition.
Is my banking data protected?
Each company is isolated on the server side, access runs over HTTPS and permissions depend on each user's role: owner, administrator, accountant, sales or custom role. The audit log keeps a record of every action.
